Authorities announced for public tender the palm trees lining the southern coast of Fenfushi island in Alif Dhaal atoll.

In addition to palm trees lining the coast – begining from the south west, the trees at the island’s health center and another unused property have also been announced for tender.

The island’s local government council is looking to lease these palm trees for a period of three years. Starting prices to lease them are at MVR 2,000 per year.

In its letter to announce the tender, the council promised utmost transparency and said that the highest bidding amounts will be made public every day.

In addition to coconut and acai yields, palm trees are also used to produce coir rope and dried palm leaves are an expensive commodity, used mainly for thatching.

Bidders must also put forth financial coverage, at the rate of MVR 1,000, for waste created by palm trees that are leased.
