Maldives ruling party’s protests in capital Malé have been halted.
Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has been holding nightly protests in Malé since October 1, accusing the Elections Commission (EC) of rigging September’s presidential election.
Nilandhoo constituency MP Abdulla Khaleel told RaajjeMV that the protests have been halted temporarily as there are ‘much more important work to be done’.
He said that the party is currently working on the campaign of its deputy leader and Fonadhoo constituency MP Abdula Raheem Abdulla, who is contesting for the post of parliament speaker.
The Joint Opposition Parliamentary Group, on Wednesday, submitted a no-confidence motion against current speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed with 51 signatures, including 13 lawmakers from the ruling party.
The opposition has decided to nominate Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim to the post. The speaker will be elected through a parliament vote.
