The opposition coalition nominated Qasim as Parliament Speaker on Wednesday

Business tycoon Qasim Ibrahim has on Wednesday proposed his bid for Jumhooree Party (JP)’s leadership.

Qasim, who was formerly the leader of the party, had lost this position after having been sentenced to imprisonment back in August 2017. The party had however, not elected a leader at its last congress.

Qasim was unable to run for party leadership as he was serving a prison sentence after being found guilty of bribery.

The Jumhooree Party announced that it has opened up the opportunity for interested individuals to apply for the post of leader. JP's announcement comes after the High Court on Monday overturned Qasim’s three-year prison sentence, making him eligible for the position that he has held since the party's inception.

Also, on Wednesday the opposition coalition decided to nominate Qasim as the parliament speaker after removing current speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
