The Criminal Court has dismissed the charge against former President Mohamed Nasheed for the alleged arrest of President Abdulla Yameen.

The state charged Nasheed with the arrest and detention of then-MP of Mulah Yameen in K. Aarah island during his presidency on 10 July 2010.

In a tweet on Wednesday, attorney Hisaan Hussain said that the Criminal Court has sent the second terrorism charge against Nasheed back to the Prosecutor General and annulled the arrest warrant issued against him in relation to the new charge.

She expressed hope that Nasheed will be cleared of his conviction in line with the United Nation’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the United Nation’s Human Rights Commission rulings and Wednesday’s petition from the opposition coalition lawmakers for his release.

Nasheed was given a 13-year prison sentence after being found guilty of abducting then Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed.

Nasheed, who has been living in the United Kingdom since receiving political asylum, has announced that he will return to Maldives on November 1.

His Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has vowed that Nasheed will return as a free man and that a huge welcome is being prepared.
