High Court has scheduled an appeal hearing for former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s regarding his prison conviction.

The hearing has been scheduled for 9:15am, Thursday.

The opposition leader was sentenced to one year and six months by the Criminal Court after his arrest during the state of emergency in February. He was sentenced on an obstruction charge for refusing to hand over his mobile phone to the police.

Since the High Court has already concluded Maumoon’s appeal hearings last week, it is likely that the court will be giving its verdict on Thursday.

At the appeal hearings, the state admitted that the Criminal Court did not follow proper procedure when conducting Maumoon’s trial and also agreed that the lower court did not grant him enough time to assign new legal representatives after his attorneys left his case.

Maumoon has recently been released on bail along with his son MP Faris Maumoon, and son-in-law Mohamed Nadheem.

The State has also charged Maumoon with terrorism but the trial is ongoing at the Criminal Court.
