Reports have surfaced that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) had spent over MVR 30 million for ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) campaign activities for the 2018 Presidential Election.

A top official at the corporation told RaajjeMV that the company’s finances had spent several millions on the ruling party’s campaign activities. The official further revealed that statistics have shown the amounts reaching over MVR 30 million.

It was further revealed that many of the props used throughout campaign activities were bought for by the corporation and that they have no idea where the props and equipment ended up.

Moreover, HDC had arranged catering for all the activities as well and have several pending payments to be made to different parties.

The official went on to state that HDC had hired over 150 employees during the campaign days, with a basic salary of MVR 8,000. Following this, the corporation had to spend over a million MVR for the salaries of these employees. It was further revealed that these employees were hired without announcing for job opportunities and that the employees had little to no work to do.

Furthermore, HDC had also covered all the costs of activities run by First Lady Fathmath Ibrahim in capital city Male’s suburban extension Hulhumale during the campaign days as well as during Eid.
