After living in self-exile for over three years, the current administration’s first Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed returned to the Maldives on Saturday.
He was welcomed at Velana International Airport (VIA) by opposition Jumhooree Party (JP)’s leader Qasim Ibrahim, and other senior officials of the party. The former VP signed on to JP back in February.
Speaking to the media after landing at VIA, Jameel noted that President Abdulla Yameen’s jailing of every single individual that had different opinion ‘is no coincidence,’ adding that ‘this is now in the past’.
Jameel, who has been living in exile in the United Kingdom, has been vocal against the current administration’s various misdoings.
Jameel was the sitting president’s running mate during the 2013 presidential campaign. He was impeached in July 2015, so that then tourism minister Ahmed Adeeb could take the post. However, Adeeb was later impeached in November that year, over accusations of being involved in an assassination plot on Yameen.
