Chief of Defence Force, Major General Ahmed Shiyam has said that the military will 'honour' the decision of the Maldivian people.
He said this while speaking to RaajjeMV regarding reports that the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is working to nullify opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s win in the 2018 presidential elections.
The Defence Chief dismissed the rumors and vowed to honour the decision of citizens.
Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s vice president Mohamed Shifaz recently said that the institutions will not allow incumbent President Abdulla Yameen, who lost to Solih in Sunday's polls, to forcefully remain in power.
“Neither General Shiyam, the acting police commissioner, the elections commission, nor the broadcasting commission would oppose the decision of citizens.”
On Monday, Yameen conceded defeat, saying that he accepted the people's decision and that he will remain until November 17; when president-elect Solih is to assume office.
While countries such as USA, China and India have congratulated the newly elected president, international elections observers had deemed Sunday's election 'free, fair and transparent'.
