The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s flag has been hoisted in Kulhudhuffushi island of Haa Dhaalu atoll.

The flag was hoisted after the walk held by island residents on Tuesday, to celebrate the opposition coalition’s momentous win in the Presidential Election held on Sunday.

RaajjeMV understands that a national flag has also been hoisted atop the MDP flag.

While the flag had previously been put up in the island, officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) had taken it down under a court order. MDP supporters had hoisted flags in many islands following the Supreme Court ruling which ordered the release of political detainees and reinstatement of opposition aligned lawmakers. During those days, police officers were seen taking down the flags from many islands as well as capital city Male.

On Sunday, MDP's candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had won the Presidential Election with 58 percent, leading the votes with 134,616 votes which is the highest a candidate has received in a presidential election in the country.
