It has been revealed that the number of people who did not vote in this year’s Presidential Election exceeds that of 2013’s.

Out of the eligible voters to vote in the election held on Sunday, 88.8% had cast their votes, however, records show that 91.4% of eligible voters had cast their votes in 2013’s election.

According to the temporary results publicized by the Elections Commission, 28,258 out of the 262,135 eligible voters had not cast their votes in Sunday’s election, which is a 37% increase compared to the number of people that didn’t vote in the final round of 2013’s election.

Records show that 20,544 people had not cast their votes in 2013’s ballots.

This year’s poll comprised of over 24,000 new eligible voters and 2013’s poll comprised of 30,000 new voters.

Observers of the election stated that the number of people who didn’t vote had hiked due to the various issues that surfaced regarding the election such as purchasing ID cards and re-registration issues which led to the rise of questions regarding the validity of this year’s election.

Candidate number two, Solih had won Sunday’s poll with 38,523 votes more than candidate number one, President Yameen.

The results on Sunday showed that Solih won with 58 percent, leading the votes with 134,616 votes which is the highest any presidential candidate has received in a presidential candidate in the country. President Yameen came in second with 96,132 votes. Once in office, he will become the first Maldives President that is not native to the capital city, Male’.
