Discussions were held on Monday to release all unlawfully convicted political prisoners

Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chairperson Hassan Latheef has stated that self-exiled former President Mohamed Nasheed will meet his people “very soon”.

Latheef stated this while speaking at a press conference held at MDP’s main office on Monday, going on to reveal that discussions have been held between President elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and incumbent President Abdulla Yameen on Monday, before Solih in sworn in as President of Maldives.

As such, discussions were held to release all unlawfully convicted political prisoners, as well as to bring back the ones who have fled their convictions and are living abroad.

MDP’s chairperson stated that President Nasheed will be joining the oath taking ceremony of President elect, Solih.

“We want Nasheed to be with us to join in the celebration of this success even now. We will continue to meet with the President and make these requests to free political leaders” said Latheef.

After the authorities convicted him to a 13-year jail term, Nasheed has been living in self-exile in the United Kingdom after fleeing his prison conviction. However, Nasheed had been visiting neighboring Sri Lanka to meet foreign delegates as part of his reform efforts for Maldives.

Latheef further revealed that Jumhooree Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim, who also fled his prison conviction and resides in Germany, will also be allowed to return back to Maldives.
