Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has said that he is willing to support any domestic or international investigation into the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Company’s corruption scandal.

The former executive deputy said in a statement on Monday that he will support and potentially participate in the investigation into the MVR 1.22 billion case.

The Joint Opposition’s presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that he will ensure that the matter is investigated if he is elected through the ballots to be held next week.

While the government has publicly declared that Adeeb and a number of associates are responsible for the corruption, the former vice president has pointed towards incumbent President Abdulla Yameen and asserted that he is the true mastermind behind it.

An Anti-Corruption Commission probe found that a total of MVR 1 million had been deposited into a Maldives Islamic Bank account operated by President Yameen. Adeeb said in Monday’s statement that this money has already been used.

An Al Jazeera exposé had uncovered a money laundering scheme that also implicates Adeeb and even President Yameen. Yameen has asserted his innocence while his administration deemed the report to be ‘biased, and unsubstantiated’.
