Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has requested the Elections Commission (EC) to put photos on the voters list.

The main opposition party made this request in a letter signed by secretary general Anas Abdul Sattar.

The letter, which has been shared on Twitter, states that there is concern over how free and fair the upcoming presidential elections would be after the EC made the decision not to show photos of voters in the list.

Noting that the voters lists in earlier elections showed photos of registered voters, MDP stated that not publicizing photos will make way for electoral fraud.

In the letter, MDP stated that it is EC’s responsibility to make sure that the elections are free and fair.

The regulation regarding the September 23 presidential elections was first publicized with the requirement to show photos on voters list, but was later retracted.
