A number of ruling party activists that were heavily involved in President Abdulla Yameen’s 2013 campaign efforts have announced support for his rival in the upcoming ballots, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

They released a joint statement on Thursday claiming that President Yameen would fail to attain even 3 percent votes from the island.

Among the activists that defected is Ahmed Shareef, a board member of the Maldives Airport Company Limited who left the state run enterprise in July.

Shareef is also closely related to Health Minister Ahmed Nazim and was involved in Yameen’s bid for candidacy in 2013 and in the campaign efforts of ruling party contestants in last year’s local council elections.
