Police deny commenting on identity case filed by Adhaalath

Maldives police has refused to make a comment regarding an identity theft case filed by opposition Adhaalath Party.
When questioned regarding the case filed at the police on August 23, its media officer said that he did not wish to comment on the matter.
In a letter to the acting police commissioner, the party noted that this is in violation of Article 312 of the Penal Code.
Adhaalath is seeking action against four individuals at a press conference held under the party's name on August 13, which was aired live by government-aligned broadcasters. Their details have been shared with authorities as well, according to the party.
Noting that some of those at the press conference are members of the party, Adhaalath's media committee chair told RaajjeMV that they are only seeking identity theft charges against the ones that are not.
While police had denied commenting on the case, Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon was arrested, charged and sentenced to nearly five months over a similar case filed by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). He was charged with identity fraud for using PPM's flag and logo.
