Doctors were taken from capital Malé City to Maafushi Prison on Tuesday, amid reports that jailed former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's health condition had deteriorated.
An official from Maumoon's Reform Movement (MRM) told RaajjeMV that doctors at Maafushi Prison had advised for the former president to be taken to Malé for a checkup.
Noting that his lawyers were scheduled to meet him on Tuesday morning, the official said that they were informed of Maumoon's health status only after inquiring on the cancellation.
RaajjeMV understands that authorities decided to bring in doctors to Maafushi Prison as he is unable to travel due to his health condition. While he was previously been diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), doctors have advised against keeping him in isolation.
The country's former long-standing leader was arrested after the controversial Supreme Court ruling in February.
While he was arrested after declaring a nation-wide state of emergency, he was sentenced to 19 months in prison for obstruction of justice for allegedly refusing to handover his mobile phone to the police.
