Poll results will be disclosed the same way as in previous elections: Elections Commission

Opposition has raised concerns over surfacing issue of possible electoral fraud

Temporary result sheets will be put up at polling stations

Have ordered a supply of 550 tablet computers

Elections Commission has stated that they will the announcing the September poll results similarly to the way it was announced in the previous elections.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram said that results of the ballots will not be announced through the tablet computers which the EC has ordered a supply of, stating that the tablets will be used for the purposes that notebook laptops were used for in the Presidential Election of 2013.

As such, officials at polling stations during election day will be using the tablets to check the data of registered voters as well as to prepare sheets for the procedure. Like the previous election, Akram said that temporary results will be put up at polling stations after this year’s election as well, going on to assure that no such changes have been brought to this year’s election procedure.

Commission spokesperson claimed that it is intolerable that certain individuals are questioning the validity of the September election. He added that everything about the September polls will be carried out as mandated under the law and within the legal ambit.

The commission said that the decision to use tablet computers instead of notebook laptops in this year’s elections was reached for the sake of convenience and affordability. As such, the commission has placed an order for a supply of 550 tablet computers.

The opposition coalition had previously raised concern that the commission is bringing in tablets to announce the results of the votes at polling stations, having asserted that they will not accept a result publicized by tablet computers and calling on the EC “not to bother with counting votes if they cannot write them down with pen and paper”.
