Former President Mohamed Nasheed has accused the Elections Commission of potential electoral fraud, over apparent discrepancies in number of voters.

In a post on Twitter, Nasheed said that there is no reason that the number of re-registered voters should rise by 45 percent, as reported by the Elections Commission.

The opposition leader’s post translates to, ‘the number of eligible voters increased by 10 percent in the last five years. Enrollment at schools in Malé also increased by 10 percent. And polling stations at island resorts was reduced by 50 percent. So, there is no reason that the number of re-registered voters should increase by 45 percent’.

Ending his post, Nasheed said that the commission will not be able to deceive the public and that the Joint Opposition’s presidential candidate, who he has endorsed and said trusts unequivocally, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will win the ballots.

The Elections Commission said it had received no less than 95,000 re-registration forms, two times that of 2013. The commission expects 23,000 of the total 262,000 eligible voters to cast ballots for the first time this year.
