Maldives Police Service (MPS) has brought Member of Parliament (MP) for Maduvvari constituency, Mohamed Ameeth into their custody.
Police had made the arrest early Tuesday evening, in Gaaf Dhaal atoll Gadhdhoo island while he was active in a door-to-door campaign in the island.
His arrest comes at a time when incumbent President Abdulla Yameen has begun his campaign activities in the island as well.
Ameeth’s arrest was revealed through a tweet posted by Vice Chairperson of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s economic committee, Ibrahim Ameer, who wrote that Ameeth had been arrested while active in the door-to-door campaign in Gadhdhoo island. The Vice Chair went on to state that arrests follow President Yameen’s first step on any island.
RaajjeMV understands that MP for South-Thinadhoo constituency Abdulla Ahmed had also been taken into police custody along with MP Ameeth.
