Self-exiled former President Mohamed Nasheed has reiterated that the opposition will do 'everything' to free his predecessor and former adversary, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

While Sunday marked six months since Gayoom's arrest, Nasheed in a tweet emphasized that the country's former long-standing ruler is jailed 'unfairly'.

"We will do everything possible to free him", added Nasheed to the tweet penned in Dhivehi.

Gayoom was arrested four days after the Supreme Court issued its controversial February ruling, after incumbent President Abdulla Yameen, his half-brother, declared a nation-wide state of emergency.

He is accused of an attempting to overthrow the government, together with son Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Faris.

While both have denied the charges, Gayoom has since been sentenced to 19 months in prison, after the Criminal Court found him guilty of obstruction of justice.

Also on Sunday, members of the Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) revealed that the government has been attempting to make a 'deal' with the former president but that Gayoom is against it 'even if he has to stay in jail for 10 years'.
