Opposition coalition’s unity has ‘shaken’ President Yameen's confidence: ex-VP Jameel

Dr. Jameel called on the international community to not let President Yameen rob the election

'This was well planned to delay and disrupt the election'

The military on Saturday announced threats to national security with reports of conspiracies

The opposition coalition’s unity has ‘shaken’ incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s confidence, says the first ever Vice President to have served in President Yameen’s tenure, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.

The ex-VP took to twitter on Saturday evening following reports of threats to national security brought under the spotlight by an online news outlet according to whom the Maldives military is ‘on alert’. This information surfaced following a post on a page representing Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar on social media platform Facebook, saying that the military has been receiving reports that some individuals are working to create chaos in the country in the near future.

Shortly after the news was publicized, Dr. Jameel took to twitter, writing that the only security threat is really the “threat of defeat” to President Yameen.

“We have been receiving reports that some individuals are conspiring to create chaos and meddle with the concord of the country following which officers of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Service (MPS) are closely monitoring to ensure such things are avoided” reads the post typed out in Dhivehi by Shareef on Facebook. In the post he further called on the public to inform the forces if anyone has any information regarding such threats.

The former VP had scoffed the announcement by the security forces, writing that it was “well planned to delay and disrupt” the approaching September election after the “polls show government’s defeat”.

Dr. Jameel went on to write that the unity shown by the opposition coalition since the announcement of their Presidential candidate and following the commencement of their campaign activities, has shaken President Yameen’s confidence.

The former VP, a heavy critic of President Yameen since he was ousted from office, went on to call on the international community including the European Union’s council and Ministry of External Affairs, India, to not let President Yameen rob the election.

A wave of panic and confusion has taken the citizens following the message from the military with less than 50 days till the election.
