Deadline to submit the application for the presidential election slated for the 23rd of September has been extended.

According to an announcement made by the Elections Commission, the deadline has now been extended to the 10th of August, whereas the initial date was on the 04th of August.

Elections Commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram said that the change was brought following the National Advisory Committee’s discussions to bring said changes as several public holidays will be held during the 10 days that were given to submit the application forms, which would make it difficult for would-be candidates to attain the relevant documents from state offices.

Those who wish to submits their bids for candidacy in the September election are required to submit their application form and necessary documents to the office on the third floor of the Elections Commission, where forms will be accepted from 09:00 a.m. to 02:00 p.m. every day, except for Fridays. On Fridays, the commission will be accepting forms from 02:00 p.m. to 04:00 p.m.

The Maldives Constitution states that any qualified candidate between ages 30-65 have the right to run for office. Candidates are required to pay a fee of MVR 100,000 along with their application form.

While some have announced their decision to run for presidency this year as indepdendent candidates, they are required to submit documents proving that they have the support of at least 1,500 people.
