Tuna prices hike in the local fish market nearing the end of Ramadan

Items in the local market have become scarce as well, with prices for watermelons, chillies and types of leaves skyrocketing within the past few days

The hike in prices is due to the scarcity of tuna by suppliers

A kilogram is priced at MVR 70

There has been a hike in the prices for tuna in the local fish market.

According to merchants at the local fish market, a kilogram of tuna is priced at MVR 70 while two days back the price was set at MVR 50.

Merchants said that the hike comes following the scarcity of tuna from suppliers and that it is normal to observe a hike in tuna prices nearing the last ten days of the fasting month of Ramadan given that less fishermen go for fishing nearing the end of Ramadan. Tuna was available in a limited amount.

Some of the prices for local fish include horse mackarel's for MVR 15 per fish and mullet for a MVR 100, with other fishes prices ranging to MVR 150.

Moreover, local grown products at the local market have also become scarce with prices for watermelons, chillies and types of leaves skyrocketing within the past few days.
