Ahmed Mauroof, a legal expert and former Under Secretary for Legal Affairs at the President's Office, has stated that all investigative hearings of the special commission established by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu must be broadcast live on television. The commission was formed to review the Maldives' conduct in the maritime boundary dispute with Mauritius, which was adjudicated by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).
Mauroof made these remarks following the President's decision to establish a special presidential commission to investigate the state's handling of the ITLOS case, amid allegations that the ruling resulted in significant losses for the Maldives.
Regarding the matter, Mauroof stated that although the current administration came to power promising to investigate former government officials over the maritime boundary dispute, they have failed to take any action despite holding full state authority. He further noted that while appealing the ITLOS decision was a presidential pledge made by President Muizzu, no progress has been made even as the administration enters its third year in office.
Furthermore, Mauroof stated that the matter must be investigated; however, he insisted that all investigative hearings should be broadcast live on television for public viewing. He added that the former administration stands ready to remain accountable regarding the issue.
Mauroof further stated that the government is suddenly raising this issue in an attempt to suppress the ongoing discourse surrounding the Ras Male' project. He added that the public is well aware of these underlying motives.
