The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade has announced that it will take legal action against businesses that fail to clearly display prices on goods offered for sale.
The Ministry of Economic Development has announced that it is receiving numerous complaints regarding retail outlets failing to display prices clearly on their merchandise. According to the Ministry, many businesses are not marking items in a manner that is easily visible to consumers.
The Ministry further stated that under Section 16(a) of the Consumer Protection Act, it is prohibited to display any goods for sale without clearly indicating the price to the consumer.
Under the provisions of the law, goods are considered to be appropriately priced in two ways: either by having the price directly written, printed, or attached to the item itself, or by clearly displaying the price at the location where the item is placed in a manner that leaves no ambiguity as to which product the price refers to. Furthermore, all retailers are required to ensure that the prices of goods offered for sale are displayed clearly and visibly, in full compliance with the standards stipulated by the law.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Economic Development stated that it will conduct inspections and monitoring under Section 66 of the Consumer Protection Act to ensure that businesses comply with the standards prescribed by law. The Ministry also noted that action will be taken under Section 84 of the Act against businesses found to be operating in violation of the law by failing to display prices on goods.
