The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has brought a new shipment of five-Rufiyaa banknotes into the country following a shortage of the denomination in the local market.
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced that the newly printed banknotes will enter circulation starting the 15th of this month.
In a statement regarding the matter, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) clarified that the current shortage of five-Rufiyaa notes in the market is due to the physical deterioration and wear of notes presently in circulation. The Authority further noted that it is working continuously to ensure the supply of banknotes meets the ongoing cash demands of the economy.
The five-Rufiyaa note is widely used in daily transactions and small-scale retail trade. According to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the current shortage in their stock is also attributed to a significant decline in the volume of five-Rufiyaa notes being deposited back into the authority through commercial banks.
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) stated that the five-Rufiyaa note is one of the most frequently issued denominations to the public and businesses. The Authority expects that the circulation of this new stock will resolve existing shortages of the five-Rufiyaa note, thereby addressing the challenges currently faced in maintaining the flow of cash within the market.
