MP Ibrahim calls for permanent solution to rising trend of fatal accidents in Male' area

Mohamed Ibrahim, the Member of Parliament for North Galolhu, has formally addressed a letter to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla seeking a permanent solution to the rising number of dangerous road accidents in the Greater Male' Area.

In the letter, MP Ibrahim highlighted potential parliamentary actions that could be taken to pressure relevant institutions into implementing the necessary measures to ensure road safety.

MP Ibrahim highlighted that the surge in dangerous road accidents has sparked widespread public fear. He noted a concerning rise in incidents resulting in the loss of young lives and permanent disabilities. While a joint hearing of the Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services and the Judiciary Committee was proposed for August 4, 2025, to address the obstacles in achieving justice for such cases, MP Ibrahim pointed out that no effective solution has been implemented to date.

To address this issue, the member proposed several measures, including holding a public forum to gather citizen input on road safety hazards and summoning the heads of relevant institutions to the committee for clarification. These institutions include the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, the Maldives Police Service, and the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Furthermore, the Member emphasized the urgent need to introduce amendments to the Maldives Land Transport Act. Specifically, the proposals include increasing penalties for fatal accidents caused by reckless driving, the revocation of licenses, and the establishment of a system to permanently withhold the licenses of repeat offenders. The Member also highlighted the importance of establishing a comprehensive insurance framework to ensure that victims of road accidents receive guaranteed compensation.

In the letter, the member further emphasized the importance of establishing specific timelines to expedite the investigation and prosecution of traffic accidents. Additionally, the member requested that the relevant authorities be provided with the necessary budget and resources to install speed monitoring cameras and automated enforcement systems, aimed at curbing speeding in Malé and Hulhumalé.

MP Ibrahim stated that these proposals were submitted to protect the lives and property of citizens and to restore public confidence in the road justice system. The member therefore requested the assistance of the Speaker of the Parliament to find an urgent solution to this issue.
