Work is underway to install air quality monitoring stations, with four stations expected to be operational by the end of the year

According to the Ministry of Environment, data from these stations will be publicly displayed, enabling citizens to take necessary precautions during periods of poor air quality.

The Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Ali Shareef, has announced that efforts are underway to install air quality monitoring stations across various regions of the Maldives, with four stations expected to be operational by the end of this year.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office on Thursday, Minister Shareef stated that haze levels are expected to rise again as the Northeast Monsoon begins following the end of September and throughout October and November. He further noted that this issue escalated significantly last year, leading to reduced visibility and prompting the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to issue several public health advisories.
Minister Shareef stated that the most crucial step in addressing this issue is to monitor air quality levels, determine their safety standards, and provide this information to the public without interruption. He further noted that based on this data, the necessary public health advisories can be issued in the most effective manner.
Minister Shareef stated that efforts are underway to complete the installation of four monitoring stations by the end of this year as part of this initiative.
Minister Shareef noted that work has already commenced on a station in Galolhu. He further highlighted that, unlike previous installations, these new stations will feature public displays showing real-time air quality data.
What we can do is closely monitor the air quality and provide continuous updates to the public regarding safety levels. By consistently sharing information on whether current air quality meets safety standards, we can issue more effective and timely public health advisories. To achieve this, we are currently installing air quality monitoring stations across various regions of the Maldives. Furthermore, Minister Shareef stated that such centers have already been established in six regions across the Maldives. These locations include K. Villingili, Sh. Funadhoo, L. Gan, and Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, as well as the cities of Fuvahmulah, Addu, and Kulhudhuffushi.
