Health Insurance for 20th Majlis Members Hits MVR 15.92 Million

Amid growing public concern over the substantial expenditure on these parliamentary perks, more than 5,000 citizens have signed a petition calling for the abolition of this benefit.

It has been revealed that 15.92 million Rufiyaa was spent on health insurance for members of the 20th People's Majlis as of May 27.
In response to a Right to Information (RTI) request submitted to the People’s Majlis, the parliamentary secretariat has disclosed details regarding the total expenditure on health insurance for members over the past few years.
By the end of this past May, a total of MVR 101.01 million had been expended. This includes MVR 2.94 million spent on insurance for members during the final year of the 17th Parliament. Furthermore, during the 18th Parliament, a total of MVR 25.48 million was spent on insurance for sitting members, while MVR 3.63 million was allocated for the insurance of former members.
Furthermore, a total of MVR 35.6 million was spent on health insurance for members of the 19th Parliament, while an additional MVR 10.65 million was expended on insurance for former members of the same assembly.
Furthermore, the Parliament's administration has disclosed that while the current 20th People's Majlis spent 15.92 million Rufiyaa by the end of May, an additional 6.79 million Rufiyaa was spent on insurance coverage for former members during the same period.
Furthermore, a total of 11.3 million MVR has been budgeted for the insurance coverage of Members of Parliament for the period spanning May 28, 2026, to May 27, 2027.
Public concern is mounting over the expensive health insurance packages provided to Members of Parliament. In response, a petition calling for the abolition of these high-cost insurance benefits for lawmakers has garnered more than 5,000 signatures.
