Concerns are mounting among a large number of parents and guardians as a shortage of infant formula continues to affect the market.
Baby formula is a specially formulated milk designed to provide essential nutrition for infants in situations where breastfeeding is not possible or when supplemental feeding is required.
In a social media post regarding the issue, a mother stated her belief that the matter requires immediate attention. She further emphasized that someone must speak out about the difficulties currently being faced.
She stated that despite efforts over the past three days to source "NAN Stage 2" infant formula from various pharmacies and shops across Male' and Hulhumale', the product remained unavailable.
Efforts to locate the formula have extended beyond Male' to the atolls, yet it remains unavailable. Highlighting that this is not an isolated struggle, she noted that numerous mothers post daily in community groups, desperately searching for the product.
Furthermore, noting that the shortage is not limited to "Nan Stage 2," she stated that mothers are also facing significant difficulties in sourcing "Lactogen" and various other brands of infant formula. She emphasized that this is not a routine stock shortage, but a serious issue for infants who rely on specific types of formula for their nutritional needs.
She further questioned who should be held accountable for this situation. She asked whether the responsibility lies with the importers, the suppliers, the distributors, or the relevant government authorities. She noted that while the exact distribution of responsibilities remains unclear, someone must take accountability when sourcing infant formula has become such a significant burden.
Spending the entire day calling pharmacies, attempting to source formula from other islands, seeking help from strangers online, and repeatedly posting in Facebook groups—all while trying to find someone traveling from abroad to bring back a supply—is an exhausting ordeal. Yet, this is the harsh reality many mothers are forced to face today.
Expressing her concerns on the matter, another mother shared that her child can only consume "Similac" brand formula. She noted that sourcing this specific formula from the islands is an immense challenge, as it is not readily available in local shops.
However, she noted that sourcing formula from Male' is no easy task. Since the formula must be sent via air cargo and flights to the islands are not scheduled daily, she explained that they often have to wait for the next available flight to receive the necessary supplies for her child. Furthermore, she highlighted that because "Similac" is expensive, purchasing and maintaining a large stock at once presents a significant financial challenge.
Some observers also noted that these difficulties arise due to the current structure of the relevant regulations in the Maldives.
Another individual commenting on the matter noted that it is a reality that must be accepted that not all mothers are able to breastfeed, nor are all infants able to be breastfed.
He stated that simply telling helpless parents that "breastfeeding is the best option" is insufficient, and that relevant government authorities must take immediate action. He further emphasized that this is an extremely serious issue.
