Land was allocated exactly where and in the quantities requested by government, yet no progress made: Fehendhoo Council VP

Ali Shaufaan, Vice President of the Fehendhoo Island Council, has stated that the government's recent changes to the decentralization system are stalling local development projects and causing significant setbacks for residents. He further refuted claims that delays are due to a lack of cooperation from local councils, noting that while land has been allocated for various initiatives, practical implementation remains at a standstill.

The Vice President of the Fehendhoo Council, Ali Shaufaan, has stated that the changes currently being introduced by the government to the decentralization system will result in significant detriment to the public.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program, Shaufaan stated that looking at Fehendhoo alone, the government's decisions have resulted in a 100 percent loss for the island.

The council's vice president stated that these losses were primarily caused by the forced suspension of numerous projects scheduled for the final year. He further noted that changes being introduced by the government to the decentralization system are significantly hindering planned development projects across various islands.

Shaufaan stated that approximately 12 plots of land have already been allocated in Fehendhoo alone for various government projects. However, he noted that work is currently underway on only one of those sites.

Therefore, he stated that the claims suggesting the government's inability to execute projects is due to a lack of cooperation from councils are inconsistent. He further noted that land is being allocated exactly as requested by the government and at the specific locations they designate.

Furthermore, Shaufaan noted that while tourism has been introduced in Fehendhoo, the industry is not expanding at a satisfactory pace. He highlighted that the island faces significant challenges in attracting investors. Shaufaan also stated that there are currently only three guesthouses operating in Fehendhoo.

As numerous councils voice their concerns regarding ongoing changes to the decentralization system, it has become evident that these shifts are creating significant obstacles to local development. The reduction of administrative powers previously granted to councils, coupled with budget cuts for development projects, is reportedly causing substantial difficulties for island residents.
