President nominates Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur for Information Commissioner post

The nomination has been forwarded to the Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions for review; Abdul Aziz, a veteran public servant, previously served as a Member of Parliament in addition to his prior tenure as Information Commissioner.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has submitted the name of Al-Usthadh Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur (Maazee, L. Maavah) to the People’s Majlis for the position of Information Commissioner, a role he has previously held.
The Secretary General of the People's Majlis announced President Muizzu's nominee during Sunday's parliamentary session. The nomination has since been forwarded to the Committee on Independent Institutions for further review.
Applications have been opened for the position of Information Commissioner, as the term of the incumbent, Ahmed Ahid Rasheed, is set to expire this September. However, authorities have not yet disclosed the number of individuals who applied for the post following the announcement.
Abdul Azeez served as the first Information Commissioner appointed under the Right to Information Act. He left the position on July 22, 2019.
Furthermore, Abdul Azeez previously served as the Member of Parliament for the Maavah constituency. He currently holds the position of Minister of State for Arts, Culture and Heritage.
