Organizers for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, have confirmed that 74 culturally diverse nations and territories will participate in the upcoming multi-sport event.

Commonly known as the Friendly Games, the competition acts as a worldwide arena where athletes from member territories gather to compete in a spirit of cooperation and sportsmanship.

The inclusion of the Maldives in this prestigious event signifies the latest chapter in its shifting relationship with the Commonwealth over the past ten years. The island country made its initial debut at the 1986 Edinburgh Games and participated continuously up through 2014.
However, political factors led to its departure from the Commonwealth in 2016, rendering the nation unable to contend in the 2018 Gold Coast Games. After officially regaining its Commonwealth membership in 2020, the Maldives returned to the international athletic stage at the 2022 Birmingham Games.
While Maldivian athletes are preparing to compete once more in Glasgow in 2026, the country is still searching for its first Commonwealth medal. Nevertheless, its competitors have made substantial strides in events like athletics and swimming.
At the Glasgow opening ceremony, Mohamed Aan Hussain was granted the privilege of bearing the national flag while leading a committed squad of eight Maldivian athletes.
The 2026 Games will feature a reduced schedule of 10 sports, including track cycling, swimming, and athletics. This downscaled format was adopted to guarantee the viability of the event after the initial host, Victoria, pulled out because of surging expenses, leading Glasgow to step in with a smaller and more environmentally and economically sustainable structure.
