Based on the month-over-month price fluctuations for critical commodities in Maldives, the cost of vegetables experienced a major spike of roughly 20 percent during the previous month of June.

Data published by the Maldives Bureau of Statistics on 8 July 2026, shows a general upward trajectory for the Essential Consumer Price Index (ECPI) throughout June 2026.

Looking specifically at Malé, the total ECPI reached 121.92, which translates to a 2.17 percent acceleration in the rate of inflation between May and June 2026. Taking a broader look at the prior year, the yearly inflation figure for June 2026 outpaced June 2025 by 8.04 percent.

Focusing strictly on groceries, the monthly price tag for food increased by 2.85 percent. The absolute highest jump occurred within the vegetable group, where expenses skyrocketed by 20.86 percent. Meanwhile, consumers paid 1.75 percent more for milk, dairy items, and eggs. Conversely, a few food sectors saw minor relief; meat expenses went down by 0.98 percent, fish goods dropped by 0.45 percent, and fruit costs fell by 0.07 percent.

When evaluated over a 12-month period, food expenses have climbed by 8.60 percent. The most striking yearly surges were documented in vegetables at 22.44 percent, meat at 21.13 percent, sugary goods including jam, honey, chocolate, and confectionery at 11.36 percent, and the milk and egg category at 9.50 percent.

For drinks, refreshment prices went up by 0.64 percent from May to June 2026, fueled by a 1.85 percent increase in coffee goods and a 0.75 percent increase in tea. Over the course of the year, drink costs moved up by 5.49 percent, with coffee in particular soaring by 19.83 percent.

Shifting to household utilities and self-care commodities, the cost of cooking gas and alternative fuels stayed completely flat in June when compared to May 2026. Even so, these utility items have risen by 14.54 percent when contrasted against June of the prior year. Personal grooming and hygiene items enjoyed a minor monthly dip of 0.17 percent in June, yet their overall price tag still stands 3.16 percent higher than it did in June 2025.

The Essential Consumer Price Index (ECPI) operates as a monthly metric generated by tracking 2,549 distinct varieties of merchandise distributed across 96 unique classifications, encompassing groceries, refreshments, power sources, and body care items. Within this tracking system, food represents the largest share with a weight of 70.94 percent, followed by beverages at 14.20 percent, personal care goods at 8.43 percent, and gas alongside fuel at 6.43 percent. Serving as a subset of the broader Consumer Price Index, this data structure functions as a critical mechanism for monitoring price baselines and spotting preliminary indicators of inflationary stress.

Maldives economic engine about to sputter and stall

The World Bank warns of a severe economic slowdown in Maldives, with growth projected to plummet to 0.7 percent amid rising debt and inflation. High external debt, a shortage of foreign currency, and geopolitical tensions are straining the nation's financial stability and increasing poverty risks. To avoid a total crisis, the government must implement urgent fiscal reforms, including cutting subsidies and managing public debt that is expected to exceed 140 percent of GDP by 2028.
