Sobe and Saeed to contest North Hithadhoo by-election
The North Hithadhoo constituency seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling that disqualified the former member, leading to a by-election scheduled for June 6. The Elections Commission has confirmed that candidates from the MDP and PNC will contest the seat, with the official results slated for announcement on June 8.

The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that two candidates will contest the upcoming by-election for the vacant North Hithadhoo constituency seat in the People's Majlis.
The seat for this constituency became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling that disqualified the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mohamed Sinan. The court determined that Sinan no longer met the constitutional requirements for office due to an outstanding proven debt that remains unpaid.
In connection with this matter, the Elections Commission (EC) initially opened applications for those interested in contesting the by-election from April 14 to April 29. The commission subsequently extended this deadline until 3:00 p.m. on May 2.
The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that two candidates have filed their nominations for the upcoming by-election by the application deadline. The candidates include one representative from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and one from the People’s National Congress (PNC). The Commission further confirmed that both applications have been officially accepted.
Former Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq is contesting the election on the MDP ticket, while Ahmed Saeed is representing the PNC.
The election is scheduled to take place on June 6, with voting hours set from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Vote counting will commence 30 minutes after the polls close. According to the Elections Commission, the official results of this election will be announced on Monday, June 8, 2026.
