Maldives completely runs out of "Glargine" insulin, a life-saving medication required daily by patients living with diabetes

The depletion of "Glargine" insulin stocks at STO, the Maldives' sole importer of the medication, has sparked fears of life-threatening consequences for numerous diabetic patients. While reports suggest the shortage stems from customs clearance delays, this marks the second such supply disruption in just two months, raising serious concerns over the reliability of essential medicine availability.

The supply of "Glargine" insulin, a daily essential for diabetic patients, has been completely exhausted across the Maldives.

A reliable source has informed RaajjeMV that supplies of Glargine insulin have run out and are currently unavailable at STO pharmacies. The source further noted that the date for when stocks will be replenished remains unknown.

Noting that this issue first surfaced two months ago, he emphasized that this is a grave injustice to those living with diabetes, as it places their lives at significant risk. He further highlighted that since STO Pharmacy is the sole importer of this insulin to the Maldives, it is unavailable from any other source.

Information has been received that the delay in the availability of Glargine insulin was caused by setbacks in clearing the shipment.

When contacted regarding this matter, STO stated that they would provide a response shortly.

Furthermore, reports indicate that the Diabetes Society of Maldives—an organization dedicated to supporting diabetic patients and raising public awareness about the condition—is facing significant operational challenges due to a lack of funding. The crisis stems from the government’s failure to release the administrative grants allocated for non-governmental organizations since February.
