Ibrahim Nazil, the Minority Leader of the Parliament and Member for South Hithadhoo constituency, has stated that while 648 million Rufiyaa is spent annually on Maldivian embassies abroad, there is no visible evidence of the work being carried out by these embassies and high commissions.
Nazil stated that while the government claims to be seeking to merge the two elections in the name of cost-cutting, its actions are entirely contradictory to that goal. He noted that the extent of increased spending is evident just by looking at the Foreign Ministry alone.
MP Nazil stated that when the current administration took office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs operated on a monthly budget of 23 million Rufiyaa.
However, Nazil noted that the Foreign Ministry's current monthly budget stands at MVR 54 million, which amounts to an annual expenditure of MVR 648 million.
When the current administration took office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs operated on a monthly budget of 23 million Rufiyaa. This figure has now surged to 54 million Rufiyaa per month, driven primarily by increased spending on foreign missions and embassies.Ibrahim Nazil, Member of Parliament for the Hithadhoo South constituency.
Nazil stated that the details of the work carried out by embassies must be disclosed to the public. He noted that with 648 million Rufiyaa currently being spent on embassies annually, a significant amount of public funds will be expended over a five-year term.
Nazil stated that the government's current rhetoric regarding cost-cutting measures is inconsistent and lacks credibility.
