The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched a formal investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving Sofwan Ahmed, a well-known coach and Executive Committee member of the Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM).
A police media official confirmed that an investigation is underway involving an individual responsible for training athletes within a national sports association.
While authorities have not disclosed further details at this stage, they confirmed that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the case.
Reports indicate that the allegations against Sofwan involve attempts to use intimidation to obtain sexual favors from a female athlete. In response to these allegations, the Volleyball Association of Maldives suspended Sofwan from his position as head coach of the National Women’s Volleyball Team last year. He was also removed from his role on the association’s Executive Committee.
It has also been noted that similar allegations against Sofwan had previously circulated on social media platforms. In addition, information suggests that several players formally raised concerns with the association in the past. Despite these complaints, no disciplinary action was taken against him at the time.
As reports of such misconduct continue to emerge within the sporting community, public calls are growing for these cases to be treated with greater seriousness and for firm action to be taken. However, observers point out that significant challenges remain in addressing and resolving such sensitive and complex issues within the sector.
