Maldives becomes ultimate playground for the world's elite: superyachts, private jets flood the archipelago in 2026
Maldives experienced a surge in ultra-wealthy visitors during the 2026 New Year period, with over 130 private jets at airports nationwide, representing a 30-40 percent increase. Maafaru International Airport recorded 98 private jet movements in December alone, while luxury resorts operated at full capacity. Industry experts credit strategic infrastructure development for reinforcing the Maldives as a premier luxury destination.

The Maldives has firmly cemented its reputation as the go-to destination for the world’s wealthiest individuals as 2026 began.
The nation’s waters and airports have been teeming with superyachts and private jets, drawing influential billionaires and high-net-worth individuals from across the globe.
The festive season has marked a promising start for Maldivian tourism, with most luxury resorts operating at full capacity.
By New Year’s Day 2026, more than 130 private jets were parked at airports throughout the country, representing a significant 30 percent to 40 percent increase compared to usual periods.
Velana International Airport (VIA) saw over 30 private jets parked on its apron, with senior officials from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) confirming that the airport had reached its full capacity.
Maafaru International Airport in Noonu atoll has also emerged as a major luxury travel hub, recording 98 private jet movements in December alone.
Presently, approximately 40 to 50 jets are parked at Maafaru.
Meanwhile, Gan International Airport in Addu City hosted five to 10 jets, and smaller numbers were seen at Hanimaadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi airports.

In addition to the influx of private jets, several prestigious superyachts have been sighted across various atolls.
These include:
- Nord (148m) - Owned by Alexei Mordashov (Russian billionaire)
- Al Lusail (125m) - Owned by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani (Emir of Qatar)
- Faith (96m) - Owned by Lawrence Stroll (Billionaire and F1 Team Owner)
- Wheels (76m) - Owned by Ralf Schmid (German businessman)
- Lady E (74m) - Owned by David Russell (British businessman)
- Sprint (54m) - Owned by an Italian millionaire
- The Sultan’s Way (30m) - Operated by a Maldivian charter company
- Synthesis 66 - Privately owned
Industry experts have highlighted that the Maldives' growing appeal to global billionaires is a major achievement for the nation’s tourism sector.
The continued strategic development of infrastructure, such as Maafaru Airport, is now yielding significant economic benefits, reinforcing the Maldives as a premier luxury travel destination.
