Over 100 housing units in Kolhufushi completed in 2024 and handed over in February 2025, still lack water, electricity and sewerage connections. MDP representative Mohamed Ihusaan accused the current administration of negligence, noting that utilities were provided to a PNC-affiliated commercial unit while residents remain unable to occupy their homes. A project for water and sewerage networks was awarded to Fenaka Corporation in December 2025 with a 20-week completion timeline.

Housing unit built in M. Kolhufushi
Residents of Kolhufushi island in Meemu atoll have been raising serious concerns as more than a year has passed since the completion and official handover of 100 housing units, yet essential services such as water, electricity and sewerage have still not been provided by the current administration.
The issue was highlighted by Mohamed Ihusaan, an MDP National Congress member representing the constituency.
According to reports, construction of the housing units in Kolhufushi was completed in 2024, and the units were formally handed over to residents in February 2025.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s “Vaudhu Naamaa” program, Ihusaan stated that the previous administration led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih developed the 100 housing units in response to requests from the residents of Kolhufushi.
He expressed frustration that, despite the passage of time, there remains no clear timeline for connecting the units to water, electricity, and sewerage networks.
He stressed that the absence of these basic services has left residents in a vulnerable situation, unable to occupy their new homes.
Ihusaan further accused the current administration of serious negligence in its handling of the housing project. He pointed to what he described as an injustice, noting that while public housing remains without essential services, water and electricity were recently supplied to a commercial unit at the Kolhufushi harbor owned by an individual affiliated with the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
The project to establish water and sewerage networks for the 100 housing units was awarded to Fenaka Corporation, with the agreement signed on 23 December 2025.
The project, valued at MVR 11,435,789.59, was contracted to be completed within a 20-week timeframe.
Ihusaan also stated that development in Kolhufushi has stalled under the current administration. He noted that despite pledges by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to carry out land reclamation and develop a ring road around the island, no physical progress has been made on either project to date.
