In October 2025, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu visited Laamu atoll as part of his official atoll tour, meeting with residents of Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo islands and outlining several development initiatives.
Projects launched and agreements signed
L. Kalaidhoo-Dhanbidhoo Causeway Project
The construction of the L. Kalaidhoo-Dhanbidhoo Causeway was officially launched. Funded by the state budget and implemented by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, the project is contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Plc. The project, valued at MVR 155,941,090.92, has a 550-day completion timeline. It includes three culvert segments totaling 111 meters, 675.6 meters of causeway, and 260 meters of revetment.
L. Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo Main Road Development Project
A new agreement was signed for the development of the main road connecting Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo. Funded by the state budget and implemented by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, the project is contracted to Road Development Corporation (RDC). The total allocation is MVR 138,382,550.82, with a 730-day completion period.
L. Kalaidhoo Harbor Upgrade Project
The Kalaidhoo Harbor upgrade, funded by the state budget and contracted to MTCC, was also announced. The project is valued at MVR 74,954,226.96 and is scheduled for completion within 540 days.
President Muizzu highlighted that these initiatives represent the fulfillment of campaign promises to the residents of both islands. He emphasized that all ongoing and newly approved projects will be prioritized, efficiently implemented, and completed as planned.
Additional promises for Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo
The president committed to signing an agreement by the end of October for the construction of a modern 30-bed hospital, aimed at improving healthcare services.
In sports development, plans were announced for upgrading existing fields, replacing the futsal turf, and constructing new volleyball and handball courts. The volleyball and handball courts, along with a fitness and recreation center, are slated for inclusion in next year’s budget.
Infrastructure improvements will also continue, with additional generators and the completion of the ongoing powerhouse project, along with other related works.
Under the government’s "Visitor Economy" policy, heritage tourism initiatives will be promoted on the islands to boost local economic opportunities.
