Widespread criticism has surfaced over the removal of individuals from Galolhu Stadium who were peacefully expressing dissent against the FIFA President during his visit to the Maldives.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino arrived in the island nation on Friday to attend a special event at the Galolhu National Stadium, which included an exhibition match between his team and a team led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. While many spectators attended to watch the event, some entered the stadium to show solidarity with Palestine and to call for Israel’s suspension from global football.

Carrying Palestinian flags and placards bearing messages such as “Ban Israel,” the protesters were swiftly removed by police officers present at the stadium. Images and videos of the incident have since circulated widely on social media, sparking public outrage.

Observers have condemned the removal as an attempt to silence peaceful expression and have described it as a disgraceful moment witnessed on Maldivian soil. Critics argue that the individuals had not disrupted public order and were merely exercising their right to express political and humanitarian concerns.

The backlash has intensified given Infantino’s perceived support for Israel and FIFA’s continued inaction over Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza. Many pointed out the double standard, noting that FIFA swiftly suspended Russia and its clubs from all international competitions following the invasion of Ukraine, yet has refused to take similar action against Israel.

As pressure mounts, calls have grown from various countries urging FIFA to suspend Israel from international football. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was among the most vocal, stating that Spain would boycott the 2026 World Cup if Israel were allowed to participate. Although Israel has since been eliminated from World Cup qualification after losing to Italy, international criticism of FIFA’s selective enforcement remains strong.

The removal of peaceful protesters in the Galolhu Stadium has reignited concerns over freedom of expression and the government’s willingness to suppress dissent in the presence of high-profile international figures.
