President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is reportedly displeased over Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) during his recent visit to the Maldives, where he attended Independence Day celebrations as the guest of honor.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Maldives was at the invitation of President Muizzu.
According to a reliable government source, President Muizzu expressed his displeasure about Prime Minister Modi meeting with MDP to some members of the Cabinet as well.
RaajjeMV understands that the issue was that, unlike other parties, MDP received more attention by having a separate meeting.
During Modi's two-day official visit to the Maldives, the meeting with the leaders of Maldivian political parties on July 26 was conducted in two separate sessions.
As such, the Indian PM first met with the delegation from MDP.
The second meeting included the leaders of all other parties.
During Modi's visit, a proposal was also made to meet with President Solih. However, as President Solih was abroad for medical treatment, the meeting could not be arranged.
After meeting with the political parties, Modi took to social media platform ‘X’, posting two separate photos of the two meetings. He wrote that an important meeting was held with members of various political parties in the Maldives, and that the participation of political party leaders in the meeting demonstrated the strong support from all parties for the robust and long-standing friendship between the Maldives and India.
Had a meaningful meeting with members of different political parties of the Maldives. The participation of leaders across the political spectrum underscores the bipartisan support for the strong and time-tested India-Maldives friendship. While Muizzu shared his dissatisfaction with ministers about the Prime Minister meeting with a delegation from MDP, the largest opposition political party in the Maldives, Indian media heavily emphasized during this trip that Muizzu came to power through a strong "India Out" campaign against the neighboring country.
While President Muizzu was angered by Modi's meeting with MDP, another issue that has come to people's attention at this time is the removal of the yellow color from the logo used on the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry, which was introduced by the MDP administration, and its replacement with gray by President Muizzu's government.
