A petition signed by 56 lawyers, expressing concern over the country's judiciary, has been rejected by the Supreme Court.

A number of lawyers had gone to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, to submit the petition signed by a total of 56 lawyers.

Following the rejection, the lawyers stood in front of the Supreme Court, holding a banner calling to end "personally or politically motivated acts of criminal prosecution" in Court.

Lawyer Mahfooz Saeed, who spearheaded the petition, said that they wanted to express the concern's over the judiciary; from how hearings are being scheduled to the 'unjust' sentencings being given out.

Furthermore, Mahfooz said that the petition noted the Prosecutor General and Attorney General failing to fulfill their responsibilities, as well as concerns over "action being taken against lawyers without a valid reason".

He added that their work has "nothing to do with proving anything to anyone," and that they began the work in order to reform things within the judiciary.

Mahfooz also said that even though 56 lawyers had signed the petition, that "even more lawyers support it," adding that they had not signed the petition because "of fear of getting their licenses suspended".

Prominent lawyer Husnu Suood said that the lawyers are to start a legal awareness programme "soon", and are to continue till "things get better" within the judiciary.
