Flats built during Solih administration as part of the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme.

It has been revealed that no resident registration will be issued for the flats built under the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme, initiated by the previous administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

According to information provided to Fahi Union, the City Council has informed that resident registration will not be issued for flats allocated under the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government, as they are being issued under a rental agreement.

The union stated that this is not a situation that has occurred for any social housing provided in the history of the Maldives so far. They also highlighted that all social housing projects to date have been based on sale agreements.

The current government is signing a "Unit Rental and Ownership Agreement" between the flat provider and the recipient, under the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme.

While it is noted that housing schemes provided in the Maldives so far have been social housing unit projects, the most recent social housing scheme, the Hiyaa Scheme, transferred ownership to recipients upon signing the agreement. For these flats, no down payment was required, and the government handed over the keys to the recipients as soon as they signed the agreement.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ in January, Muizzu stated that he would proceed with land and flat allocations as promised.

During the presidential campaign, Muizzu pledged not to take back flats given by the previous government and to provide what was given, in the way it was given, and even more comprehensively.

It has now been revealed that, contrary to Muizzu's pledges and the previous government's allocation method, flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme are being issued on terms similar to those of other real estate companies, where ownership is transferred after paying off the price over a long period. In the case, ownership is transferred to Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) after paying off the price over a 25-year period.

At a press conference held on Sunday, Fahi Union stated that the agreement made by Muizzu's government is one that alters the agreement made by the previous government and includes additional dangerous clauses aimed at taking back flats from the people.
