National carrier Maldivian has issued an advisory to passengers to expect increased congestion at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Saturday, as activities related to the grand opening of the airport’s new passenger terminal are set to unfold.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, the airline cautioned that passenger traffic through VIA is expected to rise significantly on the day of the terminal’s unveiling. This increase is also likely to bring heavier vehicle movement in and around the airport area, potentially causing delays.
Maldivian has urged all travelers scheduled to fly on Saturday to plan ahead and arrive early to avoid disruptions and ensure a smooth travel experience.
🚨With the opening of Velana International Airport’s new terminal, increased traffic is expected in the area. Please allow extra time for your journey and plan accordingly.

International travelers are advised to reach the airport at least three hours before departure, while domestic passengers are encouraged to arrive two hours in advance. Authorities have also requested passengers to complete check-in and security clearance procedures as early as possible to avoid last-minute delays.
Given the anticipated increase in road traffic near the airport, passengers are strongly encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time.
The milestone opening of the new terminal will be marked by a special first flight operated by the national carrier, Maldivian, a symbolic beginning to a new chapter in the Maldives’ aviation history.
