A fire has broken out on a fuel vessel in Vilufushi island of Thaa atoll, resulting in one person being injured.

Videos circulating on social media show the vessel engulfed in intense flames, indicating the fire was severe.

When contacted regarding the incident, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) informed RaajjeMV that the fire was reported around 9:15am on Tuesday. A police media official also stated that, based on preliminary information, the vessel involved appears to be a fuel carrier.

Further, the police institution went on to reveal that one person was injured in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Vilufushi Health Center. However, the police have not clarified whether the injured person is a foreigner or a Maldivian. They have also not yet disclosed details about the extent of the person's injuries.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) stated that firefighters from the MNDF Central Area Command’s Fire and Rescue team are actively working to extinguish the blaze on an oil tanker in the Vilufushi lagoon. MNDF reported receiving the alert at 9:41am on Tuesday.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
