Zakat al-Mal has been distributed to the individuals registered as poor in the Maldives.
Zakat al-Mal was distributed to 2,852 individuals currently registered as poor, at a rate of MVR 5,000 per individual. This is an increase of MVR 1,000 compared to last year. Last year, Zakat al-Mal distribution was MVR 4,000 per person.
The past year has been recorded as the year with the highest amount of Zakat al-Mal collected so far. Accordingly, more than MVR 100 million was collected as Zakat al-Mal in the past year.
In addition to this, it has been decided to introduce insurance coverage starting from Muharram 1447 for medical treatment of those registered in the Zakat Fund's poverty registry who are suffering from permanent serious illnesses such as cancer.
This initiative will be implemented in collaboration with Allied Insurance. The insurance is being introduced to cover expenses not covered by the national health insurance scheme ‘Aasandha’, for self-funded treatments, and in some cases, for life-saving treatments and medications that need to be obtained from abroad.
Every year, the Zakat Fund spends a significant amount on the poor.
