Several members of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have voiced their support for former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to contest the 2028 presidential election on the party’s ticket.

At a meeting held Sunday night, a significant number of members supporting President Solih stated that fielding him as the candidate in the 2028 presidential election would give MDP its strongest chance of victory.

Many individuals participated in the meeting, including former ministers, managing directors of companies, and numerous former parliamentarians.

The former Speaker of the People's Majlis and the Mayor of Malé City also attended the meeting and spoke about the importance of President Solih running for the election.

In addition to this, some council members from several islands who are currently in Malé City also participated in the meeting.

Several MDP members who participated in the meeting emphasized the need for MDP to win both the 2028 presidential election and the upcoming council elections next year. They also highlighted the importance of the party leadership working together to achieve victory in the polls.

Participants noted the difficulties and hardships faced by the people due to the current administration of Dr. Muizzu, emphasizing the need to bring back a good MDP government to the Maldives.

Some of those who expressed their opinions stated that people recognize the development projects carried out in the islands during President Solih's five-year term, as well as the social and economic progress brought to the country, even during the global Covid-19 pandemic.

President Solih did not attend the meeting, and he has not yet announced his candidacy for the election.

Previously, when inquired by RaajjeTV about contesting in the 2028 election, President Solih did not oppose the idea.

According to available information, he is currently on a personal trip abroad.
