Gov’t spokesperson defends decision to deny MDP permission to gather

The opposition criticized the government for obstructing their efforts to secure a venue, despite the president's previous stance against restricting freedom of expression

Chief Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Heena Waleed, has defended the government’s decision to deny the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) permission to use a venue for an event marking its anniversary and welcoming members from The Democrats.

Heena made these comments in a post shared social media platform ‘X’ in response to MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail's statement that the party would hold their event near the Presidential Palace Mulee’aage, after the government refused to provide a venue.

Heena stated that it is crucial to maintain democratic principles, conduct responsible political activities, and raise voices to establish a full democracy in the Maldives. She also mentioned that previously, gatherings without prior permission were only allowed in the carnival region.

Heena said that the current government has changed that policy. She noted that in addition to the carnival area, the government has designated the reclaimed area in the southwest of Malé City (Industrial Zone), Usfasgandu, and Rasfannu as areas where political activities can be conducted without prior permission.

Therefore, Heena said that instead of political figures speaking in ways that might mislead the public about these expanded opportunities, conducting activities in accordance with established rules and principles is a very important and equally graceful foundation for maintaining the rule of law and this democratic system.

Fayyaz said that they were working to arrange a venue to hold various events to celebrate the party's 20th anniversary and to welcome former President and the party’s estranged leader Mohamed Nasheed and many members of The Democrats who have decided to rejoin MDP. He stated that Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government has been obstructing these efforts, and so far, no venue has been secured for these celebrations.

Heena's post comes amid public criticism of the government for not providing space for political activities. While Heena mentioned that activities can be held in designated areas without prior permission, President Muizzu, during his presidential campaign, had stated that he does not believe freedom of expression should be restricted. He had also spoken against limiting gatherings and expressions of opinion to specific locations.
